1899 Sir John Cass Technical Institute is founded by Sir John Cass (1661-1718), an Alderman of the Ward of Portsoken, an area in which the University’s Jewry Street building now stands.
The revenue from the charitable trust he endowed enabled the governors of the Sir John Cass Foundation to establish first a school, and later the Technical Institute.
